Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Russian predamage against European manufacturers mirror and honest measure. If Russia did not respond, it would lead to a situation of unfair competition, the Minister said in an interview with the Austrian magazine Profile.
“We have imposed sanctions as a countermeasure because of one very simple thing. European sanctions limit the possibility for our banks to get loans to Finance agriculture, which would mean that the farmers from the EU to the Russian market would benefit from conditions of unfair competition. We had to make it fair. That’s all”, – quotes the Minister RIA “Novosti”.
Answering the question, under what conditions Russia will cancel the restrictive measures against the EU, the Minister said that this issue “should not be addressed to me”: “we initiated the sanctions, and we can remove them.”
Lavrov also expressed hope for improved relations between Russia and the United States under the new administration. He said that Russia did not want this, and the diplomatic cold was the result of a deliberate policy of the White house under the previous US President Obama.
Sunday American Agency Bloomberg, citing a number of sources reported that the EU made a decision on sanctions against Russia for another six months.
the EU and the US imposed sanctions against Russia in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea to Russia as a result rapidly organized referendum. In further individual sanctions escalated into sectoral amid accusations of the West in Russia’s support of separatists DND and LNR, controlling the districts of the two regions of Ukraine. Representatives of the EU and the USA repeatedly declared that the lifting of sanctions is possible only at implementation of the Minsk agreements – list of measures the implementation of which should lead to a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
