Kiev recalled the possibility to bury nuclear fuel near Chernobyl Lenta.ru

Ukraine will not cope with self-storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF), as too large economic and environmental risks. In a negative scenario of development after the failure of services to Russia, Kiev will have to bury waste in the exclusion zone of Chernobyl. About it in conversation with “ru” said the experts in the energy sector.

“the Nuclear industry in Ukraine is experiencing not the best times. There are problems with Chernobyl: a cache for the reactor is outdated, the sarcophagus upset. In addition, the Ukrainian stations are switching to American fuel refuse from Russian that will generate a lot of difficulties of the transition period. And the frequency of accidents, though small, regularly increasing,” — said the head of analytical Department of national energy security Fund (NESF) Alexander Pasechnik.

He stressed that the various environmental organizations and the International atomic energy Agency (IAEA) can respond to such actions of Ukraine, as they have no clear security guarantees.

“in processing Capacity at the Ukrainian side, and the radioactive material is likely to be just to dig in the exclusion zone. No other options here, as foreign colleagues (Westinghouse, for example) are extremely reluctant to take on services utilization, and cost of the service will be obviously higher,” — said in turn, Professor of the Higher school of corporate management, Ranepa, expert on energy Ivan Kapitonov.

According to him, this kind of “recycling” as a threat to the environment, and from the point of view of the terrorist threat. “Because to strengthen the protection of the exclusion zone are unlikely. Once again it must be noted that the Ukrainian colleagues themselves cut the branch on which we sit,” he said.

Earlier, on 24 October, the first Deputy Chairman of state Duma Committee for energy, Igor Ananskikh said “the Tape.ru” that Ukraine will hardly be able to engage in the processing and storage of SNF — for this country not enough money and expertise.

on 21 October the Minister of energy and coal industry of Ukraine Igor Nasalik said that Kiev 2017 will not pay Russia annually $ 200 million for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

Ukraine will be dry storage, where you can dispose of radioactive waste from all nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the country, said Nasalik. In the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP (1986 happened here is one of the largest accidents in the history of nuclear energy) now there is a site for storing nuclear fuel of wet type, but she is not able to accept waste in the long term.

Representatives of organizations European nuclear industry held in Brussels in early July, the seminar expressed concern about Ukraine’s plans to build such storage. In their opinion, the project is contrary to standards of nuclear safety and risks of accidents.
