Lithuania goes to the European currency – Ekho Moskvy radio station

The authorities expect that it will give additional impetus to its economy and help attract more investment.

Join the eurozone Lithuania was only at the second attempt. In 2007, the European Commission is not allowed to do so, citing the very high rate of inflation in the country. Austerity measures, however, have improved the situation in the country, and last year the transition of Lithuania to the euro was approved. However, the next six months will be for the state transition. So, its large retail chains will be required to indicate the prices of goods and in litas and euros.

For many people in the country’s accession to the euro zone has become another symbol of strengthening ties with the West and, at the same time moving away from Russia. According to the local press, a small amount of new money came into the market in advance. And in the Central Bank of Lithuania promised that all born in the republic as a gift to babies will receive one euro from a special party in Vilnius minted coins.

Lithuania joined the eurozone last of the Baltic countries.
