“Kaspersky lab” announced the wave of DDoS attacks on major Russian banks – Interfax

Moscow. 10 Nov. INTERFAX.RU – a Powerful wave of DDoS attacks hit Russian banks, it can be a distraction for a larger attack, reported “Interfax” on Thursday in a press-service of “Kaspersky Lab”.

“Kaspersky Lab” recorded a powerful wave of DDoS attacks on a number of major Russian banks, which began on Tuesday, November 8th. The attackers targeted the websites of at least five well-known financial institutions in the top 10. This series of attacks was the first in this year a large-scale DDoS-wave aimed at the Russian banks”, – said the press officer.

He said that the attacks began on Tuesday at 16:00 Moscow time and is still going on.

“Attackers using multi-vector attack types syn flood (attack on exhaustion of operating system resources) and http flood (attack on the web server in order to overload and disable access to the resource). It is sophisticated attacks that are almost impossible to beat the standard remedies that use the operators”, – said the representative of the Laboratory.

According to him, the average duration of each attack was about an hour, the longest lasted nearly 12 hours.

“Some banks were attacked repeatedly – “Kaspersky Lab” recorded series by two to four attacks with a small interval. Their capacity reached 660 thousand requests per second, while there is reason to believe that this is not the limit,” – said the Agency interlocutor.

He explained that a botnet is network of compromised devices used by the attackers for the attack, consists of more than 24 thousand cars. “More than 50% of the devices included in the botnet were located on the territory of the United States, India, Taiwan and Israel. Just attack was attended by a total of machines from 30 countries”, – said the representative of the press service.

however, he stressed that most victims of attacks, banks have been able to avoid damage caused by incidents, as the use of the laboratory protective services.

Representative of “Kaspersky Lab” said that the last large-scale series of attacks on Russian banks occurred in October 2015: then was attacked by eight of the famous Russian banks.

“Russian banks regularly face DDoS attacks, which have become one of the most common tools used in the attack on the business. Despite the fact that were attacked by websites of banks, such incidents can lead to serious consequences, because clients may have difficulty with transactions in online banking systems. Also such attacks can play the role of distraction during a complex targeted attack on the Bank”, – cited the press service of the words of the project Manager Kaspersky DDoS Prevention in Russia, Alexei Kiselyov.

He explained that the result of a DDoS attack is to stop the operation of the web resources of the organization, even for a short time entails a large loss, reputational and financial.
