HONOLULU, June 12. Today in Hawaii, as well as in some other parts of the US, widely and noisily celebrate one of the oldest national holiday – Day of King Kamehameha. This holiday was proclaimed in 1871 by King Kamehameha V in honor of his great grandfather – King Kamehameha I, or, as it is often called, Kamehameha the Great.
According to the royal decree of King Kamehameha the first day was marked by June 11, 1872 . Interestingly, this day became one of the first holidays, which was proclaimed after the receipt of the status of Hawaii the 50th state of the United States August 21, 1959.
Kamehameha the Great was the reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Islands since 1782 and until the last day his life, May 8, 1819. He is very well known and respected by the people for their contribution to reunification of the island and the foundation of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810.
Also, during his rule, laws were passed to uphold human rights during the war, wrote Calend. Kamehameha the Great went down in history as an honest and stable policies.
Interestingly, the name of the king is translated as “single” or “loneliness”, and is sometimes referred to as the ruler of “Napoleon of the Pacific Ocean”.
Traditionally, the festivities of the day include Royal fairs, carnivals, sporting events and horse races. One of the favorite sights of both local residents and tourists is a flower parade in Honolulu, during which the statue of the Great Monarch is luxuriously decorated with traditional Hawaiian flower garlands. Many government offices and schools are closed on this day, and public transport runs on a limited schedule. Some stores may also be covered.
