After closure of the project “South Stream” EU expects to conclude agreements with alternative gas suppliers, including Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Algeria. The EU intends to use all its “political weight” in order to complete the construction of the Trans-Adriatic gas pipeline by the end of 2019, writes the Financial Times.

According to the vice-president of the European Commission’s Energosoiuz Maroš Šefčovič, EU tired “every summer to negotiate how to organize winter gas supplies. The world’s largest economy should not have such problems in the twenty-first century. ” He stressed that Russia will remain “very important supplier” of energy for the EU, but its impact will decrease. Thus, in the center of its energy strategy the EU intends to put “gas-rich but politically sensitive country».

In order to achieve agreements on gas supplies to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline Shefchovich met with the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the EU this week, writes edition. Vice-President of the European Commission noted that the main problem of supplies from the Caspian region is Russia’s position. From Moscow’s perspective, the supply of gas can be carried out only with the consent of all the littoral states.

«Because we (the EU) want to diversify their sources, I think that the countries around the Caspian Sea equally want to diversify their exports” explained Shefchovich. He assured that the Brussels pipeline projects as a “project of common interest”, thus it will not be subject to the antitrust restrictions.
