Bulgaria paid the full amount of the debt to the “Rosatom” NPP “Belene” – RBK

national electricity company of Bulgaria (NEC) has fully repaid the debt in the amount of €601,6 million to the Russian JSC “Atomstroyexport” (ASE) at the suit of the NPP “Belene”. This is stated in the message of “Rosatom”.

the state company said that the Bulgarian company “fully repaid”. “Rosatom” noted that the Russian side is satisfied that the Bulgarian national company has fulfilled its obligations.

In 2006, the Bulgarian NEC and “Rosatom” signed the agreement on construction of NPP “Belene”, but the General construction contract has not been concluded and the construction of the station has not begun. The Belene project involves the construction of a nuclear power plant with two units with total capacity more than 2 thousand MW.

In March 2012 Bulgaria decided to abandon the construction of nuclear power plant “Belene”, which was attended by Rosatom. At the time of failure, the company “Rosatom” “Atomstroyexport” produced the first set of nuclear power plants equipment. Because of the refusal of the Russian company presented a Bulgarian claim in the amount of €1 billion in the court of Arbitration of the International chamber of Commerce in Geneva. He made a decision to compensate “Atomstroyexport” damages in the amount of €620 million This amount consists of the debt in the amount of €601 million, remaining €20.9 million is accrued for the amount of debt interest.

26 October, Russia and Bulgaria have agreed to hold the complete payment of the debt until mid-December 2016. If NEC will pay to “Atomstroyexport” in time the amount of debt that the Russian company may refuse to claims under the interest to the principal amount of the debt. As reported by the Bulgarian energy Ministry, the payment must be made from 16 to 25 December 2016.
