Iran could become an exporter of natural gas to Europe – Arguments and Facts

Moscow, September 25 – AIF Moscow.

Iran could become an exporter of natural gas to Europe. Such a possibility is currently reviewing the EU to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, Reuters reported, citing sources in the European Commission and the EU’s internal document.

It is noted that gas from Iran can “virtually no work to do in Europe, in the political sense, there are clear signs of rapprochement between Tehran and the West.” However, it does not take a leading position, “one of the priorities on the medium-term measures aimed at reducing dependence on Russian gas supplies,” – said a source in the EC.

The main constraints for the development of this initiative are the sanctions and the need to build appropriate infrastructure. Because of this “Iran can not be considered as a reliable alternative to Russian energy supplies in the short term,” the document says the EU.

However, Iran could become a plausible alternative to Russian gas issue in the long term. This is associated with a high potential for gas production in the country, as well as reforms in the energy sector.

According to the source, Europe plans to consider other new sources of gas imports in Central Asia.

September 15 representative of the Vice-President of the European Commission on energy Marlene Holzner stated normalization of gas supplies from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to the EU.

In the media before there was information that the EU did record gas reserves, fearing that Russia may stop reverse gas to Europe. It is reported that the European gas storage contains almost 80 billion cubic meters of gas, it is almost a fifth of the annual consumption of the European Union.

Brussels has developed a list of actions in case of disruption of gas supplies from Russia. About risks suspension of fuel exports to the EU, Europe’s chances to survive the winter without Russian gas and the opportunities the United States to replace the EU gas from Russia, AiF.ru talked to experts.
